Where is Puerto Morelos Mexico? And how do I get there?

If you are new to the area you may have never heard of Puerto Morelos Riviera Maya. It actually sits in between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. It is the one stop the ADO bus makes when traveling from Playa to Cancun.

How to get from Puerto Morelos to Playa del Carmen:

If you want to get to Puerto Morelos Mexico from Playa del Carmen then you have four Options:

  1. Take the ADO bus - ask for Puerto Morelos and get on the Cancun bus, both airport, and city buses both stop in Puerto Morelos.

  2. Take a Colectivo from Calle 2 - You need to take a collective going to Cancun and tell them you want Puerto Morelos. When you arrive take a taxi into town.

  3. Take a taxi - Call or flag down a taxi, but remember to fix the price before getting in, taxis here don't have meters so if you don't fix the price it could end up costing you!

  4. Let us take you there - We love doing day trips to Puerto Morelos and would be happy to take you and show you around. Click here for more information.

Puerto Morelos Things To Do

Beach Clubs in Puerto Morelos

One of the highlights of any trip to Puerto Morelos is visiting its white sand beaches. The water is often several different shades of blue and the perfect temperature for swimming all year around.

Puerto Morelos beach can be accessed through one of the public walkways, although we personally prefer to relax in one of the beach clubs. We recommend My Paradise Beach Club with is a very short walk from the central plaza. Although if you want to snorkel then you may prefer one of the beach clubs further down as you will be able to swim out to a part of Puerto Morelos reef from there.

Snorkeling in Puerto Morelos

Wondering what to do in Puerto Morelos? Well, the most popular thing to do is snorkeling! The reef in Puerto Morelos is a National Marine park, meaning the reef is a protected area. It is thanks to this protected status that makes the Puerto Morelos reef one of the best for snorkeling in The Riviera Maya. Our tour guides did a three day course and had to pass an exam to be able to take our guests to visit the reef.

The best way to see the reef is by boat on a tour with a professional guide who knows the reef. We offer snorkeling in Puerto Morelos as a per of our day trip. Alternatively if you want to swim out from Puerto Morelos beach then go to Ojo de Agua beach club, we wrote about it in more detail here. You won’t be able to just swim out to the protected area, but there is a small area cornered off for swimmers.

Visiting the Rute de los Cenotes

Bored of the beach? Puerto Morelos has a lot of cenotes! In fact, they have a whole road full of them called Ruta De Los Cenotes (road of the cenotes). The only catch is that without a car it can be tricky to get to. This means you will either need to rent a car, get a taxi, or book a tour.

With so many cenotes in Puerto Morelos, it can be hard to choose which one to visit. Many have horse riding, zip lines, rappelling, and kayaking so you will need to choose wisely!

Our favorite cenote is called Zapote and it’s the one we take our guests to on our Puerto Morelos tour. So if you don’t want to hassle of renting a car or booking a taxi then why not let us take you?

On this tour, we will pick you up from your hotel in the morning and take you to Puerto Morelos where you will be met by a private boat to take you out to the reef for a snorkeling adventure. Click here for more information. We do offer this excursion as a small group tour every Tuesday and Friday for a special price!

Eat Some Fresh Fish

Day trip to Puerto Morelos - Things to Do

Puerto Morelos is a fishing town so it would be rude not to eat some fresh fish while you are visiting right? We recommend Pelicanos if you just want something basic right on the beach. It’s simple, the place is clean, and it has good prices.

If you want something a bit more upmarket then try Punta Corcho. It is a little on the pricey side, but the food is excellent, as is the service.

In case you decide to spend the night the El Pirata normally has some kind of entertainment on in the evening and you can’t go wrong ordering anything off their grill. El Nicho is the place to go for breakfast, get one of their Benedicts, you won't regret it!

Chill Out

If you want to know what to do in Puerto Morelos, the answer is chill out! It is a super chill place and as it is a lot smaller and quieter than Playa del Carmen it can make the perfect day trip if you just want to relax for the day away from the crowds.

We love running tours in Puerto Morelos and would be privileged to take you on one of our tours, remember we can custom anything for you so if you want to skip the cenotes and have more time on the beach, no problem, all you have to do is ask.
